Rafa wins Wimbledon title

July 7, 2008

rafa-nada-300x156 Rafa wins Wimbledon titleRafael Nadal claimed the Wimbledon title in a dramatic five set thriller. Rafa went two sets up and looked like it was going to be a whitewash. Especially when at 4-4 Nadal at 3 break points. Federer saved them all and went on to win the next two sets in tiebreaks.

The fifth and final set was long, intriguing and was up and down like a yoyo. Until the 15th game. Where Rafa got a crucial break and served out the match to take the Wimbledon title.

Afterwards Rafa said…

“It was the most emotional match I have played in my life. Winning here will stay with me for the rest of my life. Of the four grand slams it is the most traditional. To win here on grass is very special. To win Wimbledon for us Spanish is hard to imagine. I am very happy for me, but sorry for him, because he deserved this title, too.”

Simon Says…

Quite simply the best match I have ever seen. Both players were hitting winners after winners and holding nerve on their serve. But in the end Rafa was too strong. I have to say that he is the best in the world at this moment in time, he has proved that he can play the best on grass and most importantly beat him! I thing I must say is there will never be a better final played than this, EVER!

Roger overcomes Hewitt

June 30, 2008

federer Roger overcomes HewittRoger Federer continued his dominance on grass with a convincing display over former World number one Lleyton Hewitt. The Swiss maestro won in straight sets 7-6, 6-2, 6-4. Hewitt was a little hampered by his hip injury but even if he was fully fit he would have struggled against the dominance of Federer.

Roger said…

”I think I served really well which was important against Lleyton, I saw he was struggling with his hip but nevertheless, he was dangerous. I think the key was the first set tie-break and afterwards I played consistently well and saved a lot of break points which was crucial.”

In other Wimbledon news all of the top four seeds in the Women’s draw are out. This means that the favorites are now the Williams sisters who both had comfortable victorys.  Rafael Nadal overcame Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets to meet the winner of the Gasquet Murray match. Finally Roger’s next opponent will be Mario Ancic who won a marathon match against Verdasco in the fifth set 13-11.

Federer wins at Wimbledon

roger-federer2 Federer wins at WimbledonRoger Federer is through to the next round of Wimbledon after easily defeating Dominik Hrbaty. The Swiss won the match 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Roger has been slated in the press after the French Open with many suggesting he was past his best.

He said…

I haven’t been reading and I haven’t been listening to what has been said. So, of course I haven’t been affected either. I’ve been working in there as defending champion, opening Centre Court, trying to defend the title again. That’s all that mattered to me. I came from a good tournament in Halle. I couldn’t do any better than not dropping a set, not dropping a service game, so I feel like I’m right there to do the same thing again this week.”

Simon Says…

It was a very enjoyable match played in Great Spirit. Roger looked really focused throughout and talk of the title being taken away from him is nonsense. Ok maybe not nonsense but I cannot wait to see Rafael’s reaction, them two are probably going to be in the final.

Gerry Weber results

roger-federer1 Gerry Weber resultsRoger Federer put his disappointment of Roland Garros behind him to ease past Michael Berrer 6-4,6-2 in The Gerry Weber Open.

Federer conceded just one point on his serve in the first set and eventually broke Berrer in the ninth game. He held serve and won the first set. The second set was straightforward for the number one and he won the match in just over an hour. The win is Federer’s 55th consecutive win on grass.

Not all-good news for the seeds as defending champion Tomas Berdych was defeated by Robin Soberling.

Berdych said…

“This was not one of my best days. I was not in the match and lost the first set easy. His game was solid and I couldn’t stay close to him - he has a great serve and the grass court suits his game.”

Rafa wins French Open

June 8, 2008

rafa-nada Rafa wins French OpenThe King of clay Rafael Nadal destroyed World number one Roger Federer in the final of the French Open. The Spaniard won the match in straight sets 6-1,6-3,6-0 to claim his fourth consecutive title at Roland Garros.

Roger could not find his rhythm…

The Swiss made too many unforced errors and his volleying was poor on the day. Every time he came to the net, he seemed to either knock it long or hit the net. He became very frustrated with himself because he knew that was not going to win the title for another year.

Rafa’s class…

The Spaniard proved why he is the best with some outstanding groundstrokes and winners. He always made Federer play that one extra shot and it proved because by the final set he was tired and began to lose his concentration.

The win puts the Spaniard in the same class of Bjorn Borg who also won four consecutive titles.

Roger overcomes home favourite

June 7, 2008

Roger federerRoger Federer overcame Frenchman Gael Monfils to book a place in the final against Rafael Nadal. The Swiss number one won a tricky tie in four sets 6-2,5-7,6-3,7-5. It wasn’t vintage Federer but it was more than good enough to win the match.

Roger said after the match…

“I’m relieved to win this match.I had a very good first set but then he stepped up. It was very tight.”

He then went on to talk about the final…

“Me and Rafael have played two great matches in Monaco and Hamburg this year. It’s a pleasure to play him again.”

All tennis fans will be expecting a classic when the two rivals come together again.

Federer hot on Nadals heels

June 5, 2008

roger-federer Federer hot on Nadals heelsRoger Federer kept up hus push for the Roland Garros title with a hard fought 4 set win. The Swiss overcame an early scare to defeat Fernando Gonzalez 2-6,6-2,6-3,6-4.  This win means Federer now comes up against home hopeful Gael Monfils.

Gonzalez has an appauling record against Roger but early on he didn’t looked fazed by it, but as the match rolled on you could see he just could believe in himself enough to beat the World Number one.

How did Federer rate his performance…

“I needed to get off to a good start in the second set because I wasn’t playing that great and Fernando was playing well,  he plays particularly - dinks the backhand and rifles the forehand. He is quite unpredictable, a dangerous player who has the game to upset the big guys.”
